    Question Tag

      Meaning –

Question tags are short phrases added to the end of a statement to turn it into a question. They are used to confirm information, seek agreement, or invite a response from the listener. The structure of a question tag is usually a pronoun or auxiliary verb followed by a negative or positive tag.

    For example:
You’re coming to the party, aren’t you?

She doesn’t like coffee, does she?

    He’s a good singer, isn’t he?

We should leave now, shouldn’t we?

They won’t be late, will they?

Rules of using question tags in English.

    1. The question tag is usually formed by using an auxiliary verb (e.g. do, does, did, have, has, had, will, would, can, could, should, etc.) or a modal verb (e.g. can, could, may, might, must, should, would, etc.) in the opposite form to the main verb in the sentence.
    For example:

    He is coming, isn’t he?

    They have finished, haven’t they?

She can speak French, can’t she?

You will be there, won’t you?
    2. If the main verb is in the negative form, the question tag should be in the positive form, and vice versa.
    For example:

You don’t like coffee, do you?

They won’t be late, will they?
    3. If the main verb is in the present tense, the auxiliary verb in the question tag should be in the present tense as well. If the main verb is in the past tense, the auxiliary verb in the question tag should be in the past tense as well.
    For example:

    She is studying, isn’t she?

They went to the beach, didn’t they?
    4. If the main verb is a modal verb, the question tag should use the same modal verb.
    For example:

    You can swim, can’t you?

She should go to the doctor, shouldn’t she?
