“The Guiding Light”
A Solo Anchoring Script for Guru Purnima
1. A Serene Beginning: Meditation and Welcome
(Walk to the podium with a warm, welcoming smile.)
Anchor: “A teacher takes a hand, opens a mind, and touches a heart.” A very pleasant morning to our respected Principal, honorable Chief Guest, devoted teachers, dear parents, and my fellow students.
Before we begin our formal celebration today, let us kick off the day with a short group meditation. Even just a few minutes of silence helps us calm our minds, reflect on our learnings, and feel truly grateful for the guidance we receive in our lives. I request everyone to please close their eyes for a brief moment of silence.
(Pause for 1 minute of silence)
Anchor: Thank you. With calm minds and gratitude in our hearts, I warmly welcome you all to our Guru Purnima celebration.
2. Significance of the Day & The Theme
Anchor: Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day, or Purnima, in the Hindu month of Ashadha. It proudly marks the birth anniversary of Sage Vyasa, the great sage who compiled the Vedas, which is why this sacred day is also known as Vyasa Purnima.
A guru is the one who removes the darkness of ignorance and fills our lives with the light of knowledge. To celebrate this, we have chosen a beautiful theme for today: “With a Guru, Every Path is Clear”. This day is a beautiful chance for all of us to pause and simply say to our teachers, “Thank you for believing in me”.
3. Lamp Lighting & Saraswati Vandana
Anchor: Every auspicious beginning starts with seeking the blessings of the Almighty. I respectfully invite our Honorable Chief Guest, our Respected Principal, and our distinguished dignitaries to kindly come forward and light the ceremonial lamp.
As they light the lamp, I am reminded of these beautiful words: “A single lamp can light a thousand lamps without losing its own light. Knowledge grows when it is shared.”
Now, let us seek the blessings of Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, music, and learning. “Knowledge is the light that brightens every path, and wisdom is its greatest gift.” I invite our school choir to present a beautiful Saraswati Vandana.
(After the performance)
Anchor: Thank you, dear students, for that graceful and devotional performance.
4. Honoring Our First Teachers: Parents
Anchor: When we speak of gurus, we must remember that learning doesn’t begin in classrooms; it begins at home. Parents are every child’s first teacher, and honoring them during this celebration reminds us that education is a lifelong journey. To all the parents present here today, we honor you and thank you for being the foundation of our learning. Let’s give a huge round of applause for our parents!
5. The Gratitude Wall & Student Speeches
Anchor: If you have walked down our school corridors today, you might have noticed our special Gratitude Wall. It is filled with little notes from students expressing their thankfulness, with messages as simple as “You never gave up on me” or “You made maths fun”. It is a beautiful, collective expression of our thankfulness.
To share more about the impact of great mentors, I now invite [Student’s Name] to deliver a speech sharing short stories of famous gurus, like Swami Vivekananda and his mentor Ramakrishna Paramhansa, or the great Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Let’s welcome them to the stage!
(After the speech)
Anchor: Thank you. Truly, “the influence of a good teacher can never be erased.”
6. Cultural Performance
Anchor: As the saying goes, “Where words fail, music and dance speak from the heart.” There is nothing more heartwarming than watching students perform for their favorite teachers. Our talented students have prepared a special performance based on the beautiful guru–shishya bond to add a spark to today’s celebration. Let us welcome them with a big round of applause!
(After the performance)
Anchor: What a wonderful performance! Your energy and dedication truly made this celebration even more special.
7. Felicitation of Teachers & Principal’s Address
Anchor: “Teaching is the one profession that creates all other professions.” Every doctor, engineer, scientist, and leader begins their journey with the guidance of a teacher. Today, we proudly honor those who have made a difference in our lives. I request our Respected Principal to kindly felicitate our beloved teachers as a token of our love and respect.
(Felicitation takes place)
Anchor: And now, I invite our visionary leader, our Principal, to address the gathering. The best leaders inspire us to learn, grow, and become the best version of ourselves. Sir/Ma’am, we eagerly await your inspiring words.
8. Vote of Thanks
Anchor: As we come to the end of this beautiful celebration, it is time to formally express our thanks. The great philosopher Cicero once said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” I now invite [Name] to deliver the Vote of Thanks.
Speaker (Vote of Thanks): “A very good morning to all. On behalf of all students and staff, I am glad to be standing here to express my vote of thanks. A special thanks to our Chief Guest for accepting our invitation and being here with us today. I thank our Principal for always supporting and guiding us. Our teachers, the superstars of today, always put in a lot of effort and love into making each one of us good students and wonderful human beings. Finally, thank you to all the participants, non-teaching staff, and parents who have made this day possible. Thank you once again.”
9. Conclusion & National Anthem
Anchor: Thank you for those heartfelt words. As we wind down, let’s remember that today is not just about performances or gifts; it is about carrying forward the sanskars and values our mentors instill in us: patience, humility, resilience, and the hunger to learn. Let us promise to uphold these lessons not just in classrooms, but in life.
Finally, because “unity, respect, and patriotism make a nation strong,” I request everyone to kindly rise and maintain silence for our National Anthem.
(National Anthem plays)
Anchor: Thank you everyone for your presence and enthusiastic participation. We wish you all a very Happy Guru Purnima! Jai Hind!
