एके काळी एका मेंढपाळ मुलाने गावकऱ्यांची गंमत करण्यासाठी एका ओढ्याकाठी ‘लांडगा आला, लांडगा आला’ अशी खोटी ओरड करायला सुरुवात केली. जेव्हा गावकरी मदतीला धावले, तेव्हा तो हसला आणि त्यांना ‘मूर्ख कान’ असे म्हणाला.

अखेरीस एकदा खरोखरच एक लांडगा आला. यावेळी मुलाने घाबरून ‘लांडगा आला, लांडगा आला, माझ्या मेंढ्या!’ असे ओरडले. पण गावकऱ्यांनी त्याच्यावर विश्वास ठेवला नाही. कारण त्यांनी त्याला अनेक वेळा खोटे बोलताना पाहिले होते. त्यामुळे लांडग्याने शांतपणे आणि विनाअडथळा मेंढ्या आणि मुलावर ताव मारला.

कवितेचा संदेश असा आहे की, खोटे बोलणाऱ्या व्यक्तीवर कोणीही विश्वास ठेवत नाही, जरी तो सत्य बोलत असला तरी.
