‘Lesson Based Assessment’ System from 2025-26 Academic Year
A significant change is set to occur in all schools across Karnataka. From the academic year 2025-26, the ‘Lesson Based Assessment’ (LBA) system will be implemented. There is anticipation among education experts and parents about whether this change will improve the quality of education.
What is the Purpose of the New System?
Currently, government schools use Formative Assessment (FA) and Summative Assessment (SA) methods. The main objective of the new LBA system is to continuously ensure students’ understanding and the quality of their learning. By conducting a short test immediately after each lesson or chapter is taught, it will become clear how well students have grasped the subject matter. This will encourage students to truly acquire knowledge, not just to score marks in exams. The Department of School Education and Literacy expects that this initial assessment method will be helpful for students to achieve good marks in future board examinations.
Implementation and Format:
This unit test will be mandatory for all students from Class 1 to 10. The State Educational Research and Training Institute (DSERT) will prepare question papers for these examinations and provide them to schools. Schools will have to conduct these exams and upload the students’ scores on the ‘SATS’ portal (Student Achievement Tracking System) to facilitate tracking of student progress.
Most questions will be multiple-choice (MCQ) format to make it easier to assess students’ comprehension. For primary level students, there will be engaging questions like fill-in-the-blanks, coloring pictures, matching, and identifying the odd one out.
The Format of the 10th Class Question Paper Will Also Change!
These changes will also impact the 10th (SSLC) board examination question paper. According to the new format, along with multiple-choice questions, the question paper will include various types of questions such as one-sentence answers, three or four-sentence answers, explain with reference to context, eight or ten-sentence answers, and comprehension questions based on prose passages. This will also promote students’ analytical and writing skills.
