Savitribai Phule: The First Female Teacher of India
Savitribai Phule is known as India’s first female teacher and a great social reformer. She was born on January 3, 1831, in a small village called Naigaon in Maharashtra. During her time, girls were not allowed to go to school, and women were treated unfairly.
With the support of her husband, Jyotirao Phule, Savitribai started the first school for girls in Pune in 1848. Despite facing criticism and struggles, she worked tirelessly to educate girls and uplift women in society. She also fought against social evils like child marriage, caste discrimination, and the mistreatment of widows.
Savitribai wrote inspiring poems about education and equality. She believed that education is the key to freedom and empowerment. Today, we celebrate her birthday as “Balika Din” (Girls’ Day) to honor her contributions to education and women’s rights.
Let us remember Savitribai Phule as a true hero who brought light to many lives through education.
