Karnataka State CCE Grading Guidelines
A comprehensive guide for teachers on evaluating student performance under the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) framework.
Understanding the CCE Framework
The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system implemented by the Department of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT), Karnataka, aims to evaluate students holistically rather than relying solely on single-term exams. It is designed to reduce student stress, identify learning gaps early, and assess both scholastic and co-scholastic domains.
For teachers, grading is divided into two primary categories: Formative Assessment (FA) and Summative Assessment (SA). By blending these assessments, educators can map a child’s academic trajectory across the academic year accurately.
Assessment Weightage Breakdown
To generate the final grade chart, teachers calculate a student’s total marks spanning various evaluations conducted throughout the year.
Ongoing assessments including projects, quizzes, oral tests, and homework. Usually comprises 4 separate assessments (FA1, FA2, FA3, FA4) across the academic year.
Formal written examinations conducted at the end of each term (SA1 and SA2). These test the student’s comprehensive understanding of the syllabus.
Standard Grade Conversion Chart
When final assessments are compiled, Karnataka school teachers utilize a percentage-to-grade mapping system. Below is the standard scale used to categorize student percentages into respective letter grades:
| Percentage Range | Letter Grade | Performance Indicator |
|---|---|---|
| 90% – 100% | A+ | Outstanding – Indicates comprehensive understanding. |
| 70% – 89% | A | Excellent – Indicates high level of proficiency. |
| 50% – 69% | B+ | Good – Shows satisfactory academic progress. |
| 30% – 49% | B | Average – Needs focused improvement and guidance. |
| 0% – 29% | C | Below Average – Requires remedial classes and support. |
Key Guidelines for Teachers
- Maintain Cumulative Records: Ensure that the Student Achievement Tracking System (SATS) marks are updated continuously after every FA and SA.
- Focus on Co-Scholastic Areas: Remember that CCE is not just about written tests. Grade students on life skills, physical education, art, and attitude based on documented observations.
- Remedial Actions for ‘C’ Grades: Students falling in the 0-29% (C Grade) bracket should be identified early. Teachers are advised to conduct targeted remedial interventions before the final Summative Assessment.
